Code Change Summary: Additional code language now requires a garage receptacle for each car space.
Added code language in the 2014 NEC® now requires a receptacle to be installed for each car space in the garage of a single-family dwelling. The branch circuit serving such receptacles is not permitted to supply anything outside the garage.
It is important to read this section of the code very carefully. The branch circuit supplying the garage receptacles in each car space is not required to be an individual dedicated branch circuit, but it cannot also feed other outlets outside the perimeter of the garage.
The garage branch circuit can supply the car space receptacles as well as any other general purpose receptacle inside the garage, other than those required for specific equipment.
Below is a preview of the NEC®. See the actual NEC® text at NFPA.ORG for the complete code section. Once there, click on the “free access” tab and select the applicable year of NFPA 70 (National Electrical code).
