Code Change Summary: Revised language addressing cable ties used in communication systems.
In the 2023 NEC®, the language on cable ties in Section 800.24(A) was updated to align with other similar rules in Chapter 3 of the NEC®. Now, cable ties used to secure or support communications cables installed exposed on the surface of ceilings and sidewalls shall be listed and identified for securement and support.
Additionally, the word “plenum” now replaces the word “nonmetallic” in 800.24 to more closely reflect the intent of the previous requirement for cable ties used in other spaces used for environmental air (air handling spaces).
Not all cable ties are created equal. Some have only been evaluated to secure or position a cable. UL considers a cable tie a “cable positioning device” and certifies them under UL Product Category ZODZ.

Air Handling Spaces — Product is suitable for installation in air-handling spaces (plenum) as defined in ANSI/NFPA 70, "National Electrical Code" (NEC). Heat and smoke release characteristics of the device is determined in accordance with UL 2043, "Fire Test for Heat and Visible Smoke Release for Discrete Products and Their Accessories Installed in Air-Handling Spaces."

800.24 Mechanical Execution of Work. Circuits and equipment shall be installed in a neat and workmanlike manner. Cables installed exposed on the surface of ceilings and sidewalls shall be supported by the building structure in such a manner that the cable will not be damaged by normal building use. Such cables shall be secured by hardware, including straps, staples, cable ties, hangers, or similar fittings, designed and installed so as not to damage the cable. The installation shall also conform to 300.4 and 300.11. Nonmetallic cable ties and other nonmetallic cable accessories used to secure and support cables in other spaces used for environmental air (plenums) shall be listed as having low smoke and heat release properties in accordance with 805.170(C).
