Code Change Summary: Revised labeling requirements for buildings with rapid shutdown.

In the 2023 NEC®, the previous labeling requirements in 690.56(C) for PV systems equipped with rapid shutdown on buildings were revised and relocated to 690.12(D) to keep all rapid shutdown rules and labeling requirements together in the same location.

Revisions to the labels in 2023 include eliminating the specific black and yellow color requirements, and the 3/16-inch size requirement for the supporting text.

In the 2023 NEC®, Section 690.12(D) now requires buildings with PV systems having rapid shutdown to have a permanent label located at each service equipment location to which the PV systems are connected or at an approved readily visible location that indicates the location of rapid shutdown initiation devices. The label shall include a simple diagram of a building with a roof and shall include the following words:

SOLAR PV SYSTEM IS EQUIPPED WITH RAPID SHUTDOWN.

TURN RAPID SHUTDOWN SWITCH TO THE “OFF” POSITION TO SHUT DOWN

PV SYSTEM AND REDUCE SHOCK HAZARD IN ARRAY.

The title “SOLAR PV SYSTEM IS EQUIPPED WITH RAPID SHUTDOWN” shall have these letters capitalized and having a minimum height of 3⁄8 inch. All text shall be legible and contrast the background.

Correct labeling for PV systems equipped with rapid shutdown is critical for first responders as they arrive and prepare to make their way to the rooftop. The changes to this section intend to eliminate any differences in similar labeling required by the Fire Code.
