Code Change Summary: A new code section on side-wiring entries into a box.
Large devices that require a significant amount of space in a box can make side wiring entries difficult. Entering the side of a box with the wiring method could give very little wiggle room for routing wires to the termination points on the device. Final positioning of the wired device into the box can often pinch the wiring that enters the box if sufficient room has not been provided.
In the 2023 NEC®, new Section 314.24(C) was added to ensure that adequate room is provided for side wiring entries and provides the following two options:
The new language in Section 314.24(C) also notes that the term “side” applies to any wall of a box other than the one opposite the opening.
