Code Change Summary: Previous requirements from Article 210 for branch circuits over 1000V ac and 1500V dc have been moved to a new article.
During the 2023 NEC® development, the majority of Code Panel 2 and the NEC® Code Correlating Committee thought it best to act on task group suggestions to relocate the rules for branch circuits over 1000V ac and 1500V dc to new Article 235.
Some felt that this was an overreach by the code panel since the change was the result of a task group rather than Public Inputs (code change proposals from the public).
Before this change, requirements pertaining to branch circuits over 1000V ac and 1500V dc were scattered throughout various locations of Article 210. Now, Article 210 only applies to branch circuits 1000 volts ac or less, and 1500 volts dc or less.
Branch Circuits are defined as “The circuit conductors between the final overcurrent device protecting the circuit and the outlet(s)”.
New Article 235 is made up of several specific subjects including branch circuit requirements pulled from Article 210, some requirements for feeders, and some requirements for services.
