Code Change Summary: A global change occurred to move all NEC® definitions to Article 100.

A change in the NEC Style Manual during the 2023 code cycle has brought all definitions to Article 100 resulting in 769 total definitions. Previously Article 100 contained 281 definitions.

In the past, Article 100 was reserved only for terms that were used in two or more other articles. Terms used in only one article were defined in the .2 section of the article where they were used.

In the 2020 NEC®, Article 100 was subdivided into three parts:

Bringing all definitions into Article 100 and eliminating the separate Parts resulted in all Article 100 definitions being re-alphabetized.

Most of the other NFPA standards have their definitions in only one location. The NEC® will now follow that same principle. Having all definitions in one place should help make the NEC® easier to navigate.
