Code Change Summary: The scope of Article 725 has changed.

In the 2023 NEC®, the title of Article 725 was revised to make it clear that the article only covers Class 2 and Class 3 Power-Limited Circuits. Previously, Article 725 provided requirements for Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 Remote-Control, Signaling, and Power-Limited Circuits.

Additionally, the scope of Article 725 was revised to eliminate the previous reference to Class 1 circuits. The new scope of Article 725 in Section 725.1 covers power-limited circuits, including power-limited remote-control and signaling circuits, that are not an integral part of a device or of utilization equipment.

Previous requirements for Class 1 circuits have been moved to new Article 724 since these circuits are not recognized by the IT industry as power-limited circuits and should not be in the same article with Class 2 and Class 3 circuits.

Informational Note No. 1 under the scope of Article 725 characterizes the circuits covered in Article 725 by their usage and electrical power limitations that differentiate them from electric light and power circuits. Because of the differences, alternative requirements are given regarding minimum wire sizes, ampacity adjustment and correction factors, overcurrent protection, insulation requirements, and wiring methods and materials.

Class 1 remote-control and signaling circuits were eliminated from Article 725 because the general wiring methods for these circuits is covered by NEC® Chapters 1 through 4 except where amended by new Article 724.
