Code Change Summary: New Article 495 replaces previous Article 490.

In the 2023 NEC®, the contents of previous Article 490 titled “Equipment Over 1000 Volts, Nominal” was removed and added to new Article 495 which now applies to “Equipment Over 1000 Volts ac, 1500 Volts dc, Nominal”.

This change was based on the actions of a Medium Voltage Task Group intending to improve usability and provide a platform to increase the focus on NEC® requirements associated with Medium or High Voltage.

There are five parts to Article 495:

Part I. General.

Part II. Equipment - Specific Provisions.

Part III. Equipment - Switchgear and Industrial Control Assemblies.

Part IV. Mobile and Portable Equipment.

Part V. Boilers.
