Code Change Summary: A new code section was added to address servicing and maintenance of equipment.
In the 2023 NEC®, Article 100 received a new definition of the word “servicing” which defines what it is. Section 110.17, also new in the 2023 NEC®, provides guidelines on how servicing must be performed and who should do it.
This new section corresponds with similar efforts to define and provide requirements for reconditioning of equipment, which differs from routine servicing or maintenance. Terminology for the new code section aligns with requirements in NFPA 70B which is the Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance.
Section 110.17 only allows qualified persons trained in servicing and maintenance of equipment to perform these activities. In addition, servicing and preventive maintenance must be in line with the original equipment manufacturer’s instructions, as well as information included in the product listing information, applicable industry standards, or as approved by the inspection authority.
This new section also provides three options for selecting replacement parts during service or maintenance which can be difficult when original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts are obsolete:

N 110.17 Servicing and Maintenance of Equipment. Servicing and electrical preventive maintenance shall be performed by qualified persons trained in servicing and maintenance of equipment and shall comply with the following:
(1) The servicing and electrical preventive maintenance shall be performed in accordance with the original equipment manufacturer’s instructions and information included in the listing information, applicable industry standards, or as approved by the authority having jurisdiction.
(2) The servicing and electrical preventive maintenance shall be performed using identified replacement parts that are verified under applicable product standards. The replacement parts shall comply with at least one of the following:
